I was commissioned 3 walls from the start of my 3rd year and my intention had always been to develop them as an additional final project.
CARLISLE Street art festival
Research
I chose to paint an otter as they live on the Eden river (next to where the street art would be displayed) and so I took the opportunity to highlight a magnificent creature in desperate need of more conservation efforts.
Development
The wall was painted over a 4 day period.
OUTCOMES
Penrith
After the Street art festival I was contacted by Cumbria Development Education Center. They wanted me to work with the young people living in their foyer to come up with the design, the aim was to be a collaborative wall.
The wall
Ideas in collaboration with youth at the centre
This technique to scale images up is called a doodle grid.
OUTCOMES
CONTAINER cummersdale primary school
This commission was on a container on the grounds of a primary school in Carlisle. They didn’t give me a brief, other than “animals !” … But after many ideas they got the pupils at the school to pick their favorite.
Idea generating
The Idea they picked
Overlaying image and creating a Doodle Grid to upscale the picture.
Encountered some major issues!!!
I’d used acrylic over the spray paint as I’d done on the Penrith wall, but I hadn’t taken into consideration the smoothness of the surface.
The weather was not permitting me to paint as the container was constantly wet or even frozen.
